how can you not be prepared for the olympics when you're a one-party government that can kill your citizens?

no link because you can literally pick ANY online newspaper, and they have an article on this

what totally confuses me is something i said back here, that i cant imagine how you can have a 1-party government that is accountable to NOTHING (not even the international community; i mean, it's just a week until the olympics, and they're still locking their own people up left and right) and still fuck up this hard

think about it, the chinese govt doesnt seem to care too much about the health&welfare of their own people, and yet they didnt think about dropping a few bodies to get this shit done on time? build a dam, fuck a village...all in the game. but build an olympic village...and suddenly there are deadlines and work stoppages? what?

so now we're going to have an olympics where some facilities are sort of slapped together last-minute and of questionable safety...at the same time, youre going to get a cynical display of communist unity and perfection from a bunch of poor scared-shitless chinese people dressed up like drum majorettes and oompa-loompa-ing around, going, "Oh-wee-Oh, we're here at gunpoint"

meanwhile, the air is like breathing fucking coffee grounds...this is the other thing thats just totally nuts about china...youve got them fucking up central planning and fucking up this gilded age economics and environmentalism thing. its like theyve managed to fuck up both ends of the socio-political spectrum and crush their people to death in the middle. i feel so bad

Chinese Democracy is actually so flawed and misbegotten that it's prevented Axl Rose from releasing the new Guns n' Roses album for 14 years.

this is actually the thing i feel sorriest about. i'm having trouble with the idea of really enjoying the olympics when i know it means all this money thrown into stuff that doesn't help out the chinese people all that much. famine and drought out in the west - the west is really underdeveloped - and yet back east they get all this flair that means nothing and the chinese government doesn't want anyone to look too close at that

they don't like talkin about their flair

I think the thing that bugs me most is that all this fanfare upsetting people's lives isn't going to benefit them. All this does is make "China" look good, not "do good things for actual Chinese people." The economics of it give them a bump for a couple weeks. In exchange for what? Tearing up cities and disturbing people's lives?

This is just a publicity stunt to look like a 1st world nation. No one's going to buy it. The Chinese government isn't making an effort. (If this is a big econ./business bribe to get the chinese to stop violating human rights, it's working so badly it's going in the opposite direction.) So why give these people a photo op that directly hurts people on the ground and brings them barely anything? It'd be like if, at the time, we gave the olympics to Berlin in 1936 to get them to treat the Jews better.

Oh well. At least unlike '36 we know that abuses are going on and not pretending they don't happen.
